Canelo-Bivol rematch would be at super middleweight

Although Canelo has stated that he wants a rematch at 175 pounds, the weight at which he lost to Bivol, the Russian’s desire and what he is on the way to accept, is to challenge the Mexican for the 168-pound belts.

Bivol is the current WBA semi-complete world champion and his goal in 2023 is to become the absolute monarch and overthrow the also Russian Artur Beterbiev, owner of the WBC, WBO and IBF belts.

“He has the opportunity for a rematch with Canelo for the absolute championship at 168 pounds; then he can go back to semi-complete and fight Beterbiev for the absolute championship at that weight. This is an incredible opportunity for Dmitry Bivol,” said Eddie Hearn in an interview for DAZN Boxing Show.

Dmitry Bivol changes his mind again and says he would give a rematch to Canelo Alvarez
The Russian could drop to 168 pounds

Since Dmitry Bivol defeated Canelo Alvarez last May 7, 2002 in Las Vegas, there has been a lot of talk about a possible rematch, but for different reasons it has not been signed.

Bivol has changed his mind many times, at first he said he would give the Mexican champion a rematch, but then he commented that what he wanted was to increase his legacy and that the second fight against Canelo did not interest him.

This is how the Russian has handled himself, sometimes he says he wants to fight Alvarez and other times he is not interested.

Bivol is WBA semi-complete champion and had said that he wanted to have all the belts of that division, the owner of the WBO, IBF and WBC diadems is the Canadian Artur Berterbiev. So the Russian would be looking to face Berterbiev and put Canelo aside.

Dmitry Bivol said in a recent interview to the youtube channel Boxing Social that he would be willing to drop down to the super middleweight division so he could face Canelo Alvarez in a rematch for a chance to become champion at 168 pounds.

“Of course it would be motivation enough for me to be able to make 168. But I need to think about it a little bit more. Because it’s been a long time since I’ve been at 168, I’m not that weight anymore. If the fight is possible, let’s talk about it, let’s do it. I think I’m going to be ready.”

“I want to get more belts. It doesn’t matter who, I just want more belts. Light heavyweight or super middleweight. Whatever is easier to make that fight, I prefer that one.”
